Bridging visas ease the concern of a visa expiration in Australia

The Department requires migrants to hold a valid visa when they are in Australia.

Some applicants are concerned by their expiring visa, especially during the period between the time they apply for a visa onshore and the time a decision is made on their new visa application. The Department will often grant a Bridging Visa A (BVA) which allows migrants to remain in Australia until a decision has been made on their visa application.

A BVA does not have travel rights attached to the visa. This can cause an issue when a BVA holder wants to go abroad on a holiday or for work reasons and return to Australia.

A Bridging Visa B (BVB) is therefore required.

How to apply for a Bridging Visa B (BVB)

Applicants are able to personally apply for a BVB through the ImmiAccount or through the online portal. The online portal is generally used for visa applicants that submitted their application by paper or applicants that are waiting for an appeal on their visa application. For applicants based in Melbourne of throughout Australia that require more support, they are able to use an immigration lawyer in Melbourne for assistance.

The BVB application is a relatively simple application process, comprising of a form and paying the applicable fee. The Department will want to know the reasoning behind your travels and if you are away for an extended period, they will want to know your overseas address to be able to contact you if required.

Once an application has been submitted, the Department generally make a decision on the application within two weeks. The processing time depends on their capacity at any given time.

We recommend that you do not pay for any flights until a decision has been made on the BVB application.

BVB grant

Once a BVB is granted, a travel timeframe and amount of entries is applied to the visa. It is important to pay attention to this information when making any plans for travel overseas, as visa holders may risk not being able to return to Australia

The above information is for general use only. To discuss your matter with an immigration lawyer in Melbourne, please contact us for a consultation. We will then be able to assist you with submitting any visa to live and work in Australia.
