Australia and India Launch the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES)

In a significant move to bolster bilateral ties, Australia and India introduced the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) on 23 May 2023. This initiative falls under the broader Migration and Mobility Partnership Arrangement (MMPA), aimed at facilitating two-way migration and addressing the challenges of illegal and irregular migration between the two nations.

MATES is designed to foster a mutual exchange of skills and knowledge by allowing Indian university graduates and early career professionals to gain temporary work experience in Australia. This program represents a strategic effort to enhance the professional and cultural exchange between Australia and India, with a focus on several high-demand sectors.

Eligibility Criteria for MATES Participants

To qualify for MATES, Indian nationals must meet the following requirements:

• Possess proficient English language skills, with a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.
• Have graduated from an eligible educational institution within the last two years.
• Hold a Bachelor’s degree or higher in sectors such as renewable energy, engineering, ICT, AI, FinTech, or AgriTech.

Key Features of the MATES Program

One of the notable aspects of MATES is that it does not necessitate sponsorship from an Australian employer, removing a significant barrier for many potential applicants. Participants will have the opportunity to live and work in Australia for up to two years, with a degree of flexibility in choosing employment outside their field of study. This is aimed at broadening their professional experience and networking opportunities in Australia’s dynamic job market.

The program will initially offer 3,000 places for primary applicants each year, operating on a pilot basis to fine-tune its processes and ensure its effectiveness. Participants can also bring their dependants, who will be granted work rights in Australia, thereby supporting families and enhancing the appeal of the program.

Application Process and Visa Details

MATES visa holders will be allowed multiple entries into Australia, with a 12-month window to make their first entry upon receiving the visa. The stay is capped at 24 months from the date of first entry, providing ample time for participants to immerse themselves in the Australian work environment and culture.

While the program does not permit extensions under the same scheme, participants can explore other visa options for extending their stay, subject to meeting eligibility criteria. The cost of the visa and related expenses, such as English language testing, will be detailed soon, with an emphasis on keeping the scheme accessible to a wide range of applicants.

As MATES gears up for its implementation, both Australia and India are working on an Implementation Protocol to ensure the scheme’s success. This protocol aims to guarantee diversity, fairness, and equity of access while maintaining the integrity of the program. Although the exact timeline for the commencement of MATES is yet to be announced, the anticipation among young professionals in India is palpable, marking a new chapter in Australia-India relations.
